Sony FDR-X1000V Action Cam vs GoPro Hero4 Black
Body mounted video cameras, action cams, extreme sport handy cams, whatever you want to call them, they’re just plain awesome. If you’ve ever used a GoPro or similar device, then you know how much fun they are. You probably also have hours of footage of your friends doing all kinds of insane activities while wearing one. And that footage is so much fun to see months or even years later.
If you’re at all into doing anything that would justify using an action cam, then buying one is definitely a good idea because they are very entertaining. You’ll undoubtedly capture some priceless moments.
So here we’ll compare two of the best models in the action cam game, the Sony FDR-X1000V and the GoPro Hero4 Black. Let’s see how they stack up against each other in each category.
Size and Weight
First of all, the FDR-X1000V is shaped differently than any GoPro. It has an elongated shape reminiscent of a normal camcorder. It’s quite a bit smaller than any normal camcorder though. At 24.4×51.7×88.9mm, its size is comparable to that of the Hero4, just shaped differently. The Hero4 is 41x59mmx30mm so there is just a minor size differential. The Sony Action Cam weighs 114g vs 89g for the Hero4. They’re both definitely small enough to use for anything.
Sensor Resolution and Picture Quality
The FDR-X1000V sports a 1/2.3in CMOS, just the same as the Hero4. It’s capable of capturing 4K video at 30 fps. So is the GoPro4. As you can see in this comparison video, the Sony produced vibrant video that is a bit oversaturated, while video shot with the GoPro looked a bit washed out. Actually the GoPro records colors more accurately, but the Sony creates more colorful images. If you like colors that really jump out at you, then Sony is the way to go.
The overall operation of the Hero4 is simpler than the Sony FDR-X1000V. The GoPro Hero4 Black is more intuitive to use. They do both have a companion app that can be used on pretty much any iOS or Android device.
With the FDR-X1000VR version of the Sony Action Cam, the RM-LVR2 live view remote is included. It can also be bought separately from Amazon for just under $150. It fits on your wrist and allows you to control the Action Cam remotely for a wide range of tasks. It’s also waterproof and also can be used with other Sony cameras.
Both the FDR-X1000V and the Hero4 include Micro HDMI input and 3.5mm microphone input. They each have Micro SD slots. The FDR-X1000V has an M2 memory stick slot built in as well.
Waterproof Case and Mounts
The GoPro Hero4 can go deeper at 40m vs the 10m offered by the FDR-X1000V. Sony does sell a replacement case that protects the camera for depths of up to 60m. That’s the Sony AKA-DDX1 Replacement Dive Door, which costs roughly $35.
As for mounts, GoPro has a huge and readily available selection to choose from, so there’s no way Sony can compete with them in that section yet. But Sony does offer some decent options to start with.
Recording modes and still images
The GoPro records video at 4K30, 2.7K60, 1080p120 and 720p240. You can have 720 video in slow motion at 240fps. It also takes 12mp still images. The Sony Action Cam matches those figures when using their proprietary video codec. When recording in MP4 format, it shoots 1080p video at 60fps, 720p at 100fps and 240p in 200fps. The Action Cam offers 8.8mp for still images.
Both the Sony FDR-X1000V Action Cam and the GoPro Hero4 retail for around $350. Both include a one-year warranty.Check Current Price on Amazon – Sony FDR-X1000V Action Cam Check Current Price on Amazon – GoPro Hero4 Black
The GoPro is lighter and a bit more compact. It has more mounts and a wider selection of accessories. Though the GoPro Hero4 has a remote available, the Sony FDR-X1000V’s live view display is quite a bit better. Or you could just use the app for either one.
The Hero4 is a bit easier to use. It shoots fantastic quality video and is highly regarded as being the best action camera. The new kid on the block has a lot to offer though. It has an awesome wristband remote, and bright and vibrant video that makes the colors pop out.
If you’re not going to get the Sony RM-LVR2 live view or any remote, then the Hero4 is slightly better for ease of use and compatibility. If you do plan on getting the remote, Sony’s Action Cam is pretty much just as good as the Hero4.
