A Look at the Homido Virtual Reality Headset

Virtual reality headsets are starting to pop up more and more. There are several makers coming out with new headsets at different price ranges, lead by the super cheap Google Cardboard. They all run off of Google’s VR apps too. The most notable of these new VR headset makers to emerge is the French crowdfunded project: Homido. They came seemingly from nowhere, but have created arguably the best VR headset to date.

Homido Virtual Reality Headset Though the Homido VR headset has been out for a while now, it’s been gaining a lot of momentum recently as more and more VR apps appear on the Google Play store. Imagine that, Google provides the very resources their competitors use to phase out Google’s own product, Google Cardboard. But Google Cardboard (if you haven’t noticed by looking at it) isn’t really designed to make money itself as it’s only about $17 including the lenses. Its purpose is to offer something inexpensive to spark interest and accessibility in their new field of VR apps. That’s where they are actually making money on this in case you were wondering.

So here’s where Homido steps in. They offer a more quality and justifiably more expensive VR headset that’s built to last, unlike the all-but disposable Google Cardboard.

The Homido VR headset comes with three lenses, one for the near-sighted, one for the far-sighted and one standard lens. The quality of their lenses is one of their main advantages. They’re much better than the lenses that ship with the Google Cardboard. The Homido’s lenses provide a broad field of view of about 100 degrees. That’s more than Google Cardboard, but about the same as their pricier competitor, Oculus Rift.

Like other headsets, there may be a bit of pixilation during use. That’s something that Google will have to eventually fix. Some people also experience nausea when using the Homido or other VR headsets. That of course depends on the individual, so as they say, if you can’t take the VR heat, stay out of the kitchen.

The Homido is adjustable and customizable to fit your face. You can even set the distance between the lenses and your eyes. The Homido supports a plethora of Android devices as well as all iPhones made after the 4S and even some Windows phones. With the Homido VR headset you can watch 3D videos, 360 degree videos, play specially designed virtual reality games and use any compatible VR apps.

Your phone fits into a clip in the front of the headset. You have to center it as evenly as possible to get the best VR experience. 360 degree videos function great, and are really fun. There are several pretty terrifying 360 degree horror videos that will scare your socks off. You’ll have no idea where the monsters will appear from. The effect is a very immersive horror video that makes you feel threatened from all sides.

The Homido VR headset costs around $70, about $20 less than the price of the Samsung Gear VR. For its price point, superior adjustably and quality lenses, Homido takes the cake in the fast-running VR headset race.
